Professional Internship: Assistant Sound Editor, NFB Hothouse 9

This internship is a unique opportunity for a student of Film Animation to work as an assistant sound editor in the professional context of the National Film Board of Canada’s acclaimed Animation Hothouse Program. Responsibilities include working with Pro Tools HD software in the NFB Sound Editing Suite, editing foley recordings, performing sound effects research in the NFB’s sound effects library, performing basic tracks organization for pre-mix and meeting all deadlines. The ability to meet deadlines under pressure is essential. The successful applicant will be expected to attend recording and mixing sessions as well as the final screening.

The internship is a paid position and the successful candidate will receive credit for their work while working directly under the supervision of the Hothouse Sound Designer.

Eligibility | Requirements

  1. Applicants must have completed FMAN340 – Sound for Animated Film. Academic standing in the completion of that course will be a factor in the application process.
  2. Applicants must complete the online application form below, including a brief written statement, and submit it before the deadline for application.
  3. Applicants must submit one example of sound editing for an animation film completed outside of the course FMAN340 – Sound for Animated Film. The submitted video file must be uploaded to an online video sharing website such as Vimeo, Youtube, etc and the link submitted via the form below by the application deadline.
  4. Ideally, the successful candidate will enroll for the Fall session in one of:

FMAN446-Professional Internship I (3 cr)

FMAN447-Professional Intership II (3 cr)

*Note that the dates of the Internship will not require the student to be available for the entire semester. However, students must be available for the ‘Dates of Internship’ (below) and must consider their current credit load in applying for this position.

Dates of Internship

Sound editing: November 11-22, 2013 (full time hours)

Recording Sessions (4 days, date TBA), 9:00 am – 5:00 pm daily

Mixing Sessions: November 26th-29th, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm daily

Final Screening: TBA

Remuneration will be discussed with the successful candidate. Wages will be based on a weekly rate of $500 for sound editing during the above dates with additional fees to be determined depending on the availability of the candidate to attend recording and mixing sessions.
